Johann Christoph Bach
1642 — 1703
Johann Christoph Bach was a German composer and organist of the Baroque period. Johann Christoph was an older cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach who would later describe him in his Genealogy as “the profound composer”, suggesting a solid reputation not only within the family but also in wider musical society. From the period sources
The composer Karl Friedrich Abel, a renowned viola da gamba player and pupil of J. S. Bach, was “intimate with Joh. Chr. Bach,” according to A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900). This intimacy extended to their professional lives, as Abel “gave concerts in conjunction with J. C. Bach” between 1762 and 1782, as noted in A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, with a Bibliography of English Writings on Music (1886). These joint performances were a significant part of Abel’s career in London.
