Edward Cuthbert Bairstow was active in the musical life of Leeds and York in the early 20th century, holding significant positions and contributing to local concert culture. As an organist of Leeds Parish Church in 1906, he edited the piece “To my request and earnest cry,” according to A History of English Cathedral Music, 1549-1889 (1908). His involvement in the city’s orchestral scene is noted by Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1908 and 1922), which records him among composers who conducted their own works with the Leeds Municipal Orchestra. This orchestra, established in 1903, offered ten concerts in its 1907-8 season, featuring a wide repertoire from Haydn to Sibelius and Elgar. Later, Bairstow became a conductor of the Leeds Philharmonic, founded in 1894, taking up the baton in 1917, as detailed in The New Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1924). By 1913, he had also become the organist at York Minster, and was active in the city’s Musical Society, which he continued to lead from that year.
