Dr. Callcott, identified as W. Callcott in musical notation, played a role in a notable historical rivalry concerning music historiography. According to A General History of the Science and Practice of Music, Vol. 1 (1875), Dr. Callcott “set to music” a popular catch that became “straightway in every one’s mouth.” This catch, a pun, effectively condemned Sir John Hawkins’s History of Music to “long obscurity and oblivion,” favoring Dr. Burney’s competing work. The publication notes that the catch’s impression was so profound that booksellers “sold for hardly waste paper some hundred copies” of Hawkins’s work, burying the rest.
