Guillaume-Antoine Calvière, organist of the King’s Chapel, was appointed to this prestigious position in 1738, serving during the months of January, February, and March until his death in Versailles in 1755. Though “endowed with the happiest qualities for music,” according to the Biographie universelle des musiciens (1837), he was “unfortunately born in a country where taste and studies were detestable.” Despite this, Calvière earned a reputation in France as “one of the greatest organists in the world,” with his execution and knowledge of the instrument’s resources deemed remarkable, as noted by the Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1888). However, his style, like that of his contemporaries, was said to lack elevation, and his harmony was often incorrect. A telling anecdote, recorded in the Biographie universelle des musiciens (1837), recounts a competition in 1750 where François Couperin, judging between Calvière and Dagincourt, favored the latter due to age. When Couperin praised Calvière’s skill and asked where he learned to play so well, Calvière famously retorted, “Monsieur, it was under the organ of Saint-Gervais,” a church where Couperin himself was organist. Calvière composed several motets for full chorus and many pieces for organ and harpsichord, none of which were engraved. His pupil, René Drouart de Bousset, later became one of France’s best organists, having received lessons in accompaniment from Calvière, which inspired him to study the instrument, as detailed in the Biographie universelle des musiciens (1883).
