From the period sources
Christian Cappelen was a Norwegian song-writer, active during a period when composers sought to represent the national spirit in their art, according to Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1908, 1922). He is noted for composing songs with piano accompaniment, as mentioned in A Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1883). While Cappelen, alongside contemporaries such as Winter-Hjelm and J. Selmer, showed this national inclination, Grove’s (1908, 1922) suggests that he did not “touched the true note” in the same way as K. Nordraak and Eduard Grieg, whose works were considered to more fully embody the national character.
