From the period sources
Anne Pierre Édouard Chavagnat, born in Paris on October 17, 1845, was a blind musician who studied at the National Institution for the Blind before entering the Conservatoire in 1866. There, he pursued composition under Victor Massé, earning a third accessit for fugue in 1867, a second in 1868, and later a first, according to Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1888). His compositions include pieces for the voice, choruses with orchestral accompaniment, and a collection of vocal melodies titled Mignonne. Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1888) further notes that Chavagnat’s style was modeled on that of Gounod and Bizet, composers he sincerely admired.
