Antoine Dornel, who died in Paris in 1765, held significant positions as an organist, first at La Madeleine en la Cité and later at the church of Sainte-Geneviève. While the Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique (1837) judged him “un organiste médiocre et un mauvais compositeur,” it also noted that he was considered “bon maître d’accompagnement,” suggesting a respected skill in practical musicianship. Dornel published cantatas in 1727, including works titled Les caractères de la musique and Le tombeau de Clorinde, and also saw three books of trios for violin printed.
