From the period sources
By the early 20th century, George Enescu was recognized as a prominent figure among the younger generation of Romanian composers. According to Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1908 and 1922), Enescu, alongside Lcarlatescu, had “already won for themselves European reputations in more than one branch of music,” and these sources suggest they “perhaps stand the highest” among their contemporaries.
