From the period sources
Christian Erbach was known as a famous organist and composer in Augsburg, a detail recorded in A General History of the Science and Practice of Music, Vol. 2 (1875). His influence extended through his teaching, as the celebrated organist and church musician Johann Klemme studied under him for three years. Erbach’s historical significance is further underscored by A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900 and 1905), which places him among “the most famous composers of his epoch,” alongside figures like Hans Leo von Hasler, Gumpeltzhaimer, Melchior, and Franck. Indeed, these sources collectively consider Erbach to be “one of the founders of German music.”
