Historical context

Frescobaldi’s Fiori Musicali, published in 1635, offers a collection of dignified organ pieces designed for a specific liturgical function. As a book explains, these works were intended to accompany the plain-song singing of the Magnificat. In this practice, the organist’s playing would substitute for vocal harmony in alternate verses, providing a musical counterpoint to the sung portions of the service. The collection thus served a practical and reverent purpose within church services, demonstrating Frescobaldi’s mastery in creating music that both supported and enhanced the sacred liturgy of his time.
