Johann Krieger

Johann Philipp Krieger was a German Baroque composer and organist. He was the elder brother of Johann Krieger.

Johann Krieger, a celebrated contrapuntist, was the brother and pupil of Johann Philipp Krieger, and also studied under Heinrich Schwemmer, the esteemed director of music at Nuremberg’s St. Sebald school, who was recognized as the city’s “best musical teacher” (Grove’s Dictionary, 1908). Krieger’s career saw him succeed his brother at Bayreuth, serve as court Kapellmeister at Greiz and Eisenberg, and from 1681, hold the position of organist and music director at Zittau (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900). His compositions, including “Musikalische Ergetzlichkeiten” for voices, were noted for their “marked improvement in grace and rhythm,” employing “simple harmonies, yet show[ing] more freedom and naturalness in modulation than any of his predecessors,” according to Famous Composers and Their Works (1891). Indeed, A General History of the Science and Practice of Music (1875) lists Krieger’s canzones alongside those of Frescobaldi, Kerl, and Handel as exemplifying “the true organ style.”
