From the period sources
Alessandro Longo is primarily known for his significant editorial work on the keyboard music of Domenico Scarlatti. According to Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (American Supplement) (1922), Longo undertook the publication of a complete edition of Scarlatti’s sonatas with Ricordi & Co., a project considered “the greatest boon to lovers of Domenico Scarlatti.” Six volumes of this extensive collection, comprising 300 pieces, had appeared by 1906, with plans for a further series. Longo also edited Scarlatti’s variations on Corelli’s “Follia” for harpsichord, also published by Ricordi. The New Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1924) further notes a memoir by Longo on Scarlatti from 1913, solidifying his role as a key figure in the study and dissemination of Scarlatti’s oeuvre.
