Historical context

The 3 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, emerged from a period of creative activity spanning two different cities. The composition of Fugue No. 2 in G major took place in Leipzig in 1836, a detail noted in “the book” from that year. The remaining elements of the set were completed the following year. According to “the book” from 1837, the three preludes and Fugue No. 1 were composed in Speyer. This indicates a concentrated effort across these locations, bringing the collection to its completion.
