Louis Raffy

Louis Raffy, or Rafy, was a wind instrument maker from Lyon who flourished in the first half of the sixteenth century, during the reign of François Ier. His instruments were considered excellent for their time and were highly sought after by amateurs, according to the Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique, Vol. 7 (1866). The esteem for his craftsmanship is evident in the verses of contemporary poets Clément Marot and Baïf. Marot, in his fourth complaint, speaks of a “double chalumeau, / Fait de la main de Raffy Lyonnais,” which he values “as dear as life.” Similarly, Baïf, in “Les Jeux, églogue du Devis,” mentions “a musette / That Raffy, Lyonnais, had made for Marot.” Despite this historical renown, no instruments crafted by Raffy are known to exist today.
