From the period sources

Thomas Attwood Walmisley, a pupil of Thomas Attwood, made rapid progress as both a composer and player, according to The History of Music (1886). He began his career as organist of Croydon Church in 1830, and by 1833, he was elected organist of Trinity and St. John’s Colleges at Cambridge, where he also earned his Bachelor of Music degree. In 1836, Walmisley became Professor of Music at Cambridge, a position he held until his death, and later received his Mus. Doc. in 1848, as noted in Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1890). He was among the first to deliver lectures on music with practical illustrations and was a significant exponent of Bach, whose compositions were then little known in England. Walmisley’s influence extended through his teaching, with notable pupils including Charles Ainslie Barry and Samuel Harraden, the latter of whom became a professor of Hindoo music in Calcutta, as recorded in A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900). His cathedral services and anthems, such as “Remember, O Lord” and “O give thanks,” were considered by A Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1879) to “belong almost to the present day,” combining modern merits with the skill of elder masters. A collection of his church compositions was published posthumously in 1857, edited by his father, Thomas Forbes Walmisley, who was also a musician and pupil of Attwood, according to The History of Music (1886).
